SUIDS/SIDS Online Training: The National SUIDS/SIDS Resource Center has complied an excellent listing of online provider training for the issue of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome/Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.  This resource includes training for physicians, nurses and pharmacists in a variety of areas, including prevention and bereavement and cultural competency.  Also available are educational materials for patients and families.

Core Competencies in Breastfeeding Care and Services - The US Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) has announced the publication of the revised “Core Competencies in Breastfeeding Care and Services for All Health Professionals.”  The purpose of the Competencies is to provide health care organizations with a guideline and framework to integrate evidence-based breastfeeding knowledge, skills and attitudes into standard health care delivery practice. The document can be downloaded HERE.

Bringing Immunity To Every Community - “Bringing Immunity to Every Community” is aimed at increasing immunization competency among nurses by offering practical knowledge and skills on vaccine safety and patient communication.  The course is available for free and provides 2.5 contact hours.  To view and/or take the online course, go to http://www.yourcesource.com/ecbt/.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Pregnancy Outcomes: A study published in the November 2011 edition of the British Medical Journal studies the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome with consideration of maternal characteristics and assisted reproductive technology.  Click here to see the study.


New Toolkit Supports Preemie Follow-Up Care:  Developed with pediatric healthcare experts, the "Follow-Up Care of the Premature Infant" toolkit aims at improving quality and continuity of care for preterm infants, while fostering communication between NICU staff and outpatient healthcare providers. It includes practical tools and references, an "Active Problem List" linking a preterm baby's active problems with action plans and educational materials that may be shared with parents and caregivers.  This is a collaboration between the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) and MedImmune.


FASD Prevention Tool Kit for Womens Health Care Providers: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), in collaboration with CDC, has developed the “Drinking and Reproductive Health: A Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Prevention Tool Kit”. The primary component in the tool kit is a CD-ROM that aims to teach women's health care providers how to screen and advise all of their patients of reproductive age about risky drinking and encourage the use of effective contraception among patients who continue to engage in risky drinking. It also addresses drinking during pregnancy.

Obstetric Hemorrhage Toolkit: "Improving Response to Obstetric Hemorrhage"  Toolkit was approved by the California Department of Public Health, Division of Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health. Elective Delivery <39 Weeks Toolkit: "Elimination of Non-medically Indicated (Elective) Deliveries Before 39 Weeks Gestational Age Toolkit" was approved by the California Department of Public Health, Division of Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health. This project was done in collaboration with the March of Dimes and ACOG District IX. The Toolkit is available on their website: www.cmqcc.org/<39 Weeks.

Impact of Maternal Flu Vaccination on Infant Hospitalization: A study published December 15th in Clinical Infectious Diseases found that influenza (flu) vaccine given to pregnant women reduces hospitalization due to the disease in their infants. The flu vaccine was found to be 91.5% effective in preventing hospitalization among infants when given to their mothers during pregnancy.  To review the study online, CLICK HERE.


Second Hand Smoke and Exposure in Children - A study published online December 13th in the journal Pediatrics examines the level of secondhand tobacco-smoke exposure in children who live in multi-unit housing (particularly apartments).  Even low levels of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke can put children at greater risk for a variety of illnesses.
